‘What’s in a Word’ project 

Phillips has taken a series of images to be used as Penguin Modern Classic covers. The brief was to choose two books to focus on, one in the exact style of a Penguin cover and one to be designed by the photographer. Phillips chose to do ‘Silent Spring’ which he shot in the studio, in the Penguin classic style. This cover involved still life photography. In the last project it wasn’t a strong area. This time he succeeded in many ways, for example using the lights to create both soft and harsh shadows.  

 

For 'The Secret Garden’ he shot on location. Phillips work aims to provoke an emotional response. For this cover the viewer should feel calm and relaxed, possibly intrigued and keen to explore.
